Fab Five Freddy single-handedly transformed Hip Hop from an obscure subculture to the dominant force of a burgeoning worldwide popular culture.
Yo! MTV Raps! was, for a long time, Hip Hop’s biggest platform. It was the 80s’ version of Soul Train, paving the way for programs like TRL and 106 & Park. Fab Five Freddy was the public’s envoy to a new and booming culture as the show’s presenter. Boycott of the Grammy Awards in 1989
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the inaugural Hip Hop Grammy in 1989 for their song “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” What had the potential to be a watershed event for Hip Hop culture became a farce. Despite the fact that the award was presented, the Grammys declined to broadcast the acceptance speech. This prejudice infuriated the rap community, resulting in a massive anti-Grammy movement. Fab Five Freddy was on the scene and was able to do a brief interview with The Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff about the event, which can be seen in its entirety below.

The New School’s leaders had previously come under fire when reports surfaced that star rapper Busta Rhymes was considering a solo career. What began as a routine interview quickly devolved into the group walking away from the camera to have a furious conversation. Busta Rhymes apologized for the group’s behavior after the pow-wow ended, bringing the interview to a close. In the week after the interview, the band made an official announcement of their breakup.

Yo! MTV Raps was decommissioned by MTV in 1995. As a consequence, one of television’s greatest program finales ever was born. Yo! MTV Raps said a heartfelt goodbye to the fans and supporters that came in day after day for their daily dose of Hip Hop culture with a cypher starring Rakim, MC Serch, Erick Sermon, Chubb Rock, and a few more luminaries.
