Stanley Cup dented amid Tampa Bay Lightning’s second boat parade in 10 months

The Tampa Bay Lightning were celebrating their Stanley Cup victory on the St. Petersburg waterfront when a boat carrying players, coaches and staff hit a piling Monday night, sending one player to the hospital with minor injuries.

The tampa bay lightning stanley cup dented is a news article about the Stanley Cup being dented by a boat during Tampa Bay Lightning’s second boat parade in 10 months.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Captain Steven Stamkos donned a T-shirt with the phrase “BACK TO BOAT,” which set the tone for another classic Champa Bay party on Monday, as did a photo of a severely damaged Stanley Cup that went popular on social media.

For the second time in ten months, the back-to-back Stanley Cup winner Tampa Bay Lightning were honored with a boat procession on the Hillsborough River, with thousands of supporters no longer restricted by COVID-19 coming downtown to participate in the celebration.

The Stanley Cup’s appearance in the procession, however, was cut short when the cup’s bowl was damaged during the celebrations.

A screen capture from a fan-shot video shows Pat Maroon of the Lightning carrying the damaged Cup, according to Bolts Jolts, a Lightning fan account on Twitter.

The “Keepers of the Cup” from the Hockey Hall of Fame were spotted carrying it with a blanket covering the bowl and putting it into the back of a vehicle. The Cup will be sent back to Canada for repairs, according to ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski. The cause of the Cup’s deterioration is unknown.

This isn’t the first time the Cup has been tampered with during player celebrations. For example, after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 2008, the Stanley Cup was shoved off a table at Chris Chelios’ pub in Detroit. That ding was pounded out by hand.

The atmosphere on Monday, five days after the Lightning won the Stanley Cup Final in five games against the Montreal Canadiens, was nothing like the riverside celebration held after the club won the championship last year despite playing in empty venues due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Hundreds of people on boats and other watercraft got up close and personal with the vessels transporting players and coaches. A post-parade gathering in a downtown park was postponed for more than an hour due to a severe rainstorm with strong gusts that drove spectators fleeing for shelter.

In the midst of a heavy downpour, Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and players eventually mounted the stage to address the fans.

Yanni Gourde, a forward, slid across the platform on a trolley at one point, while other players and coach Jon Cooper came down to engage with spectators along the barriers.

Forwards Alex Killorn and Nikita Kucherov went to the water on a water scooter, circled boats and gliding along the riverbank.

The Conn Smythe Trophy was put on Andrei Vasilevskiy’s head, much to the joy of drenched fans saturated by rain and champagne sprayed by players.

The Tampa Bay area has celebrated a professional sports championship for the third time in ten months, thanks to a novel parade idea devised by Tampa authorities to allow the Lightning and the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers to revel safely with supporters during the epidemic.

The Bucs were celebrated five months ago after winning the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years, with hundreds of fans lined the downtown riverfront wearing masks and observing social-distancing norms.

The Bucs’ historic postseason run started with them winning three consecutive playoff games on the road before ending with them being the first club to win a Super Bowl in their own stadium.

The Associated Press and ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski contributed to this story.
